It seems a direct follow-up to this year's 'The Wolverine' is in the works, with Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold in talks to return. Deadline broke the news, noting that 20th Century Fox wish to follow on from this summer's solo 'X-Men' after it made over $410 million at the global box office, making it the second most profitable movie in the 'X-Men' series to date (behind 'X-Men: the Last Stand,' which grossed just under $460 million in 2006). Hugh Jackman has of late spoken often about his uncertainty that he would continue to play Wolverine much longer, to the extent that I for one had come to suspect next summer's 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' would be his swansong.
