It's been revealed that Sofia Coppola is to direct a live-action adaptation of Disney's 'The Little Mermaid', as talks with the 'Lost in Translation' helmer are underway with Universal Pictures and Working Title. Based on the classic Hans Christian Anderson story, Disney experienced huge success with the 1989 animated release, which went on to gross over $200 million (and for 1989, was an impressive feat). It follows in the footsteps of Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' and the upcoming 'Maleficent' starring Angelina Jolie, as the appeal to adapt established animated classics into live-action movies seem particularly popular. It's certainly a step out of her 'zone' as a director who's used to releasing serious, adult-themed dramas, with the decision to take on 'The Little Mermaid' being a surprising one.
