Angelina Jolie's Maleficent has shot to the top of the American box office, taking $70m (£41m) in its first weekend. The modern retelling of the life of Sleeping Beauty's nemesis beat X-Men: Days Of Future Past into second place as it took $32.6m (£19.4m) Maleficent stars Jolie in the title role, alongside Elle Fanning as Sleeping Beauty. Jolie and Brad Pitt's daughter Vivienne plays the young princess in the film.
